• Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a lifelong condition caused by a buildup of lymph fluid when the lymphatic system is damaged or not working properly. This leads to long-lasting swelling in areas where lymph flow is blocked - most often an arm or leg, but it can also affect the breast, trunk, genitals, head or neck.

    What the Lymphatic System Does

The lymphatic system is a key part of your immune system. It’s made up of organs, vessels, and lymph nodes that:

    - Keep fluid levels balanced in the body

    - Help fight infection by removing bacteria and viruses

    - Move proteins and digested fats

Clusters of lymph nodes are found in the head, neck, armpits, abdomen and groin, where they filter harmful substances and support overall health.

  • Treatment of Lymphedema

There currently is no cure for Lymphedema, but it can be treated and managed with Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) which is subdivided into two phases. We can help you by designing a specific program to fit your individual needs.

Phase I is the decongestion phase and consists of manual lymphatic drainage, multilayered non-elastic compression bandaging, exercise, and skin care. This phase typically consists of 5 days per week for 3 to 5 weeks.

Phase II is the maintenance or self-care phase and consists of self manual lymphatic drainage, a life long commitment to daily and/or nightly compression garments, exercise, and skin care.
